GO WOLVES!
MR. DON STRUVE
BAND DIRECTOR
Band is a co-curricular class. Specifically, this means that it is an elective class that meets during the school day, yet part of the grading process and performances will take place after school or on weekends.
CLASSROOM PROCEDURES
The IKM-MANNING band program has a Tradition of Excellence that we wish to continue, so we need to use our class time wisely. Here are the Rules of Expectations that we have for all band classes:
SUPPLIES
Any supplies (reeds, valve oil, slide cream, etc.) can be purchased through the school—you do not need to go to a music store to obtain these items. Rieman Music stops in Manning every Monday morning to deliver any items that have been ordered or to pick up instruments that need to be repaired.
CARE FOR YOUR MUSIC
The student is responsible for all sheet music or books that are given to them. If a student loses their book or sheet music, they will need to purchase them again through the school.
INSTRUMENT CARE
The student is responsible for the care and maintenance of their instruments. BRASS PLAYERS should always have valve oil and slide cream to keep their instrument in good working shape. WOODWIND PLAYERS should always have 2-3 good reeds in their case, as well as cork grease. Rieman Music does have cleaning kits for all the different instruments—these can be ordered through the school. KEEP YOUR INSTRUMENT IN GOOD WORKING ORDER AT ALL TIMES!
SCHOOL OWNED INSTRUMENT RENTAL
Some of the larger instruments can be purchased through the school at a rental fee of $50.00 per year. There is also a $45.00 insurance program where the school will pay for any repairs needed on the school owned instrument. If a parent chooses not to take advantage of the insurance program, then they will be responsible for any repairs needed.
PERCUSSION FEES
The school yearly purchases numerous items for the students using our percussion equipment, such as marching drum sticks, cymbals, bass drums, drum heads, timpani, bells and xylophones. To help defray the cost of repairing these instruments, there is a $10.00 fee per family for any student that is a percussionist at IKM-MANNING.
CONCERT ATTENDANCE
As musicians, the reason we practice is to perform! This is the time where we realize all the hard work is worthwhile. A performance also requires that every member be in attendance and put forth their best effort to make the performance a success. Attendance at all concerts is required except for illness or family emergency. If an illness or family emergency occurs, please contact the school so they are aware of the situation. Performances are graded as a major test, with up to 100 points awarded for School Concerts and Performances. STATE CONTESTS are graded higher, with 200 points awarded for these performances.
GRADING
High School Band is a graded class, with 100 points possible each week. Points are awarded by class attendance, practice, students being on time, students attending their private or sectional lessons, and improvement on their primary instrument. These grades are included in the student’s GPA and it is possible for a failing grade to cause a student to be ineligible. This rarely happens, thanks to good communication between teacher and student.
DROPPING BAND
At the start of each semester, all students/parents will be given a three-day grace period to drop band, if they so choose. If a parent chooses to have their child drop band, they must inform the High School Guidance Teacher and have their child return any school owned instruments to the school. If the parents are renting-to-own an instrument from Rieman Music, they must contact Rieman and let them know that the instrument has been returned to the IKM-Manning band room, where Rieman Music can pick it up.
AFTER THE THREE DAY GRACE PERIOD, A STUDENT WILL REMAIN IN BAND TILL THE END OF THE SEMESTER.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES
The IKM-MANNING band program has a Tradition of Excellence that we wish to continue, so we need to use our class time wisely. Here are the Rules of Expectations that we have for all band classes:
- Always show respect for each member of the class, including the Director.
- No gum, candy or pop in the band room. Water bottles are allowed as long as they are used properly. Students will be given ONE WARNING only.
- Students will be given time at the beginning and end of class to put their instruments together or take them apart. Once the director is ready, class begins. BE READY AT THAT TIME!
- Do not play your instrument while the band director is talking—this is a distraction to those around you and to the director.
- DETENTIONS will never be given without warnings or without the director giving a student time to correct their behavior.
- ALWAYS sit with correct posture for your instrument and put forth your best effort into your playing. PRACTICE THE WAY YOU ARE GOING TO PERFORM!
